After traveling to Japan to speak at Lash Bloom Tokyo, I returned with far more than just fresh ideas. I gained a profound understanding of what true lash excellence looks like—and identified exactly where the Western market is still missing the mark.
This experience began with an invitation I simply couldn't pass up. Mai—a remarkably gifted lash technician—and her partner Jun, alongside the industry legend Aisha, invited me to Lash Bloom Tokyo to share my expertise with the Japanese lash community.
It was a sincere honour, and I am incredibly grateful to them for the opportunity. However, I didn’t anticipate how much I would personally gain from the trip.
Observing so many expert Japanese technicians—watching their process, discussing their craft, and understanding their mindset—offered an perspective on Japanese lash culture that only firsthand experience could provide. What I witnessed has fundamentally shifted my view of our industry.

The Japanese approach is defined by being calm, intentional, and exceptionally precise. These aren’t merely cultural habits; they are woven into the way lash artists work, how studios are managed, and how the client journey is curated.
To be honest, it felt like home.
I have never been the type of technician to fill the silence with small talk. My method has always been quiet and focussed—no loud background music, just a tranquil environment where clients can truly decompress. I built my own business on this foundation.
Seeing this philosophy embraced so naturally across an entire country made me realise that this isn’t just a personal style; it is a gold standard of care the global industry should strive for.
“Even without a lavish interior, this dedicated approach creates a luxury feel—which is exactly what modern clients are searching for.”
The primary distinction between Japanese and Western lash artistry isn't found in the tools, but in the philosophy.
In Western training, artists are frequently taught to achieve 100% coverage, lashing every single natural hair. Fullness is the ultimate goal, often regardless of whether the natural lashes require it.
In Japan, that mindset is non-existent.
Japanese artists follow a “less, but better” mantra. The priority is to enhance the eyes in the most refined, sophisticated way possible—not to maximise density. At times, the work is so delicate you can scarcely tell extensions have been applied, yet the final look is perfectly balanced, leaving the client looking like the most polished version of themselves.

WESTERN APPROACH |
JAPANESE APPROACH |
|
Full coverage on every lash |
Enhance, don’t overload |
|
Dramatic transformations |
Subtle, natural results |
|
Longer appointments |
Shorter, focused appointments |
|
Bold, high-impact results |
Refined, minimal looks |
|
Conversation-filled sessions |
Calm, restful experience |
Lighter, more delicate lashes are the standard. Classic and soft volume styles are favoured over heavy, dense sets. Deep black lashes remain the go-to, matching naturally dark hair for a seamless and effortless finish.
Every extension is designed to look as though it belongs there—as a refinement rather than an addition. This is increasingly what clients worldwide are asking for; the global shift toward natural-looking lashes is accelerating, and Japan is already years ahead.

From the moment a client arrives, the atmosphere is serene and the work is meticulous. The client departs feeling respected and truly cared for. This method consistently draws a more mature, higher-value demographic that values quality and consistency over temporary trends.
|
CLIENT FEELING Respected, relaxed, cared for — not rushed |
SESSION LENGTH 60–90 min vs 120–150 min for a full set |
RESULT GOAL Enhancement, not transformation |
BUSINESS MODEL Frequent maintenance visits, stronger retention |
The insights from Japan aren't just conceptual; they are practically transformative for a business.
Not every client requires a marathon appointment. A more refined approach—shorter sessions, subtle work, and more consistent maintenance—creates a more sustainable business model.
Fewer hours spent per individual client.
The ability to see more clients per week.
Deeper long-term client loyalty.
Better retention as the lashes grow out gracefully.
We must ask ourselves: are we dedicating 150 minutes to clients who would actually be more satisfied with a perfect 90-minute result?
At London Lash, our focus has always been on clean, minimal, and aesthetic results. It is reflected in our product development, our branding, and the techniques we teach.
Being in Japan felt like seeing our own values mirrored in another culture. The same commitment to precision. The same dedication to quality over quantity. The same belief that the most beautiful result is one that enhances without being overwhelming.

Lash extensions do not have to be dramatic to be impactful. Precision, a calm environment, and a genuine focus on the client's well-being will always create a more lasting impression than the heaviest volume set.
If you have been curious about the Japanese approach or are looking to bring more intention into your studio, I hope these reflections help you elevate your practice.
My sincere thanks to Mai, Jun, and Aisha for their incredible hospitality and for welcoming me into their community. It was a true privilege.
